Muhly Grass, a native Florida species, naturally occurs in coastal grasslands, hammocks, beach dunes, sandhills, and pine flatwoods and is a host plant for several butterflies and moths, including the Southern Skipperling. It is renowned for its delicate, feathery plumes that create a stunning visual display. This perennial grass is characterized by its fine-textured foliage and airy flower heads, producing striking pink to purple flower spikes in in the fall, providing a beautiful contrast against its green foliage.
Recommended for borders, rain gardens, mass plantings, or as a focal point in garden beds. Additionally, it can serve as a backdrop for fall-blooming plants such as blazing stars or Rayless sunflowers. Muhly Grass thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils. It is drought-tolerant once established, but can also take short periods of wet soil, making it a sustainable option for rain gardens.
Typically, this grass can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet, with a similar spread, creating an impressive presence in your landscape.
Muhly grass is an excellent choice for most Florida landscapes. Its foliage remains attractive throughout the year, and its fall color display is nothing short of spectacular, producing a purplish-pink haze. It also works beautifully as a specimen plant. Moreover, Muhly grass is hardy, drought-tolerant, and moderately tolerant of salt and wind.
