Botanical Name: Vachellia farnesiana
Sweet acacia is a Florida native shrub or small tree with a unique wispy appearance, dramatic dark bark, and golden puff-like flowers that fill the air with a sweet fragrance treasured in European perfume-making. These lovely blooms occur all year round but especially in winter, attracting an incredible array of pollinators, including the charming Red-banded hairstreak butterfly. Its thorny branches provide a safe haven for birds and wildlife.
Part of the legume family, it forms a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its roots, allowing it to thrive in nitrogen-poor soils. Recommended as a striking specimen tree, a flowy barrier shrub, or a beneficial addition to your food forest. This plant thrives in full sun and drought resistant when established, during a dry spell, a few deep soakings will help it thrive.
This gem naturally occurs in pinelands, coastal hammocks, and shell middens across Central and South Florida.
