Drake Elm

Scientific Name: Ulmus parvifolia 'Drake'

The Drake Elm is native to northern and central China, Korea, and Japan. It is also native to Taiwan. It has a fast growth rate and a graceful, umbrella-shaped canopy that is often described as weeping.

Key Features:

  • Foliage: Characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves that turn a vibrant yellow in the fall, the Drake Elm offers seasonal interest throughout the year. Its leaves are small to medium-sized, providing a dense canopy that offers excellent shade during the warmer months. The trunk exfoliates its gray and tan bark in mosaic, puzzle-like patterns. Deep green foliage turns golden-yellow and rusty-red in cold weather. Leaves are elliptic, leathery, and sharply toothed on the edges.

  • Growth Habit: It typically reaches a height and spread of 30 to 40 feet and has spreading root system with large-diameter surface roots, making it suitable for medium to large spaces. Plant at least 20 feet away from structures.
  • Pest and Disease Resistance: The Drake Elm exhibits strong resistance to common pests and diseases, including Dutch elm disease, ensuring a healthy and thriving tree.

Landscape Use:

With its attractive form and durable nature, the Drake Elm is well-suited for use as a street tree, in parks, or as a focal point in residential landscapes. Its ability to tolerate a variety of soil types and urban conditions makes it a reliable choice for many settings.

Care Instructions:

For optimal growth, the Drake Elm prefers well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Regular watering during dry spells will help establish a strong root system. Pruning is recommended to maintain its shape and promote healthy growth.
