Florida Hobblebush (Agarista populifolia)

Florida hobblebush, also known as pipestem, is a large, graceful, evergreen native shrub belonging to the heath family (Ericaceae). Typically grows along swamp margins and in moist to wet woodlands. In mid-spring (May to June), it produces fragrant clusters of small, white, bell-shaped flowers along the undersides of its arching branches.

Growing Conditions

This shrub thrives in partial to deep shade and performs best in moist, acidic, humus-rich, well-draining soil.

Landscape Uses

  • Screens & Borders: Works exceptionally well as a soft, natural privacy screen, specimen plant, foundation planting, or property line buffer.

  • Erosion Control: Well-suited for wet areas and moist stream banks, where it gradually colonizes to help stabilize the soil.

Ecological Value & Wildlife Benefits

  • Nectar Source: Its heavily clustered spring blooms offer rich nectar for adult butterflies and native bees.

  • Habitat & Shelter: The dense, evergreen, arching branches provide vital cover and winter protection for songbirds, tree frogs, and other garden wildlife.

Deer Resistance: Naturally resistant to deer browsing due to its inherent toxicity.
