The Wild-Lime Zanthoxylum fagara, naturally in Florida hammocks and scrubs, is a long-lived, evergreen native Florida tree or shrub known for its aromatic foliage and distinctive "lime" scent when leaves are crushed. Despite its name, it is not a true lime, though it belongs to the same family (Rutaceae).
Size & Form: Grows between 5–20 feet tall and 3–12 feet wide. It features "lacey" green foliage and very sharp thorns.
Wildlife Value: It is a critical larval host plant for the Giant Swallowtail and the rare Schaus' Swallowtail butterflies. Its fruit also provides a food source for birds.
Uses: Recommended as a hedge, buffer, or specimen tree.
Ethnobotany: The fruit is edible but acts as a numbing agent. Historically, parts of the plant have been used as a spice or for making furniture.
Reproduction: The species is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, and both are needed for fruit production.
