Jerusalem Thorn parkinsonia aculeata is a fast-growing, spiny deciduous tree/shrub in the bean family (Fabaceae), native to arid regions and prized for xeriscaping.
Foliage & Stems: Delicate, twice-compound leaves shed tiny leaflets during dry or cold periods, leaving green stems and petioles to carry out photosynthesis.
Features: Sharp double or triple spines at leaf axils; produces fragrant, bright yellow-orange flowers with a distinct red or purple top petal.
Sun & Soil: Thrives in full sun and tolerates poor, well-drained soils (sand, clay, or alkaline earth). Cannot tolerate soggy, waterlogged soil.
Landscape Use: Planted for light shade, ornamental appeal, or as a defensive barrier hedge.
Placement Note: Plant at least 15–20 feet away from house structures and water pipes due to its thorny nature.
