Florida Native Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)

The American Elderberry is a long-lived perennial shrub native to Florida, reaching heights of 10–15 feet, but can be kept to 5 feet. It is highly valued for its showy white flower clusters and its dark (blue, purple, or black) fruits. While it is deciduous in northern climates, it remains evergreen in the southern parts of the state.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial sun.

  • Moisture: Highly adaptable to wet conditions; it thrives in areas ranging from "Always Flooded" to "Not wet but not extremely dry."

  • Soil: Versatile enough to grow in sand, clay, or loam.

Landscaping & Ecology

  • Wildlife Value: A powerhouse for biodiversity; the flowers attract pollinators and hummingbirds, while the fruits are a favorite for birds and mammals.

  • Best Uses: Ideal for rain gardens, bioswales, or as a natural screen at wetland edges.

  • Maintenance Note: It can be "weedy" due to its tendency to self-seed and spread via rhizomes. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth.

Ethnobotany

The plant has significant historical and practical uses. The vitamin C-rich fruits are commonly used for wines, jams, and jellies, while the flowers can be added to salads or fermented into a light, champagne-like wine. Remove seeds before consuming.
